Maximizing Search Committee Efficiency During a Global Pandemic
Time efficiency is a premium commodity right now. With the impact of COVID-19, many individuals are balancing increased responsibility with decreased time and resources. From working from home to juggling childcare, we are all trying to do more with less. This adds greater strain to search committees, many of whom are staffed by volunteers. There are three questions search committees can apply to their process to achieve excellent results with limited resources:
Who are we looking for? A clear and evenly applied job description is the fundamental first step to search efficiency. What is the required (and preferred) experience? How do the challenges and opportunities facing your institution inform the skills your candidate should have? Begin with a standard description and update it according to the current functioning of the position with an eye toward growth.
Who is your organization? Cultural fit is one of the most undervalued aspects of a leadership search. While it may appear on paper that a Director of Admissions does the same thing at two different colleges, the reality of how those roles function in their organization are very different. What are the vision and values that guide your institution? How does the legacy of your school inform its future?
Who can help? You don’t have to navigate a search process on your own. An executive search firm can help focus and guide your search so your search is more fruitful and productive.
