Houston Strong: Lessons on Perseverance from the Astros

Last year the Houston Astros struck out 1,087 times. That is over four times more than the number of home runs they hit: 238.

That doesn’t sound like the beginning of a winning story, especially when you consider that the city of Houston had been decimated by Hurricane Harvey—a storm that tied with Katrina for the most costly tropical cyclone on record. Nearly 200,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.

Astros players began wearing patches on their uniforms that said “Houston strong.” The players were determined to play not only for themselves or a title, but also to provide a positive symbol to their haggered city.

One of the perennial lessons of sport is that your skill is only as strong as your drive. The Astros brought heart and focus to their season and it showed. They clinched the title of World Series Champions for the first time in the team’s 55-year history.

We could all learn a valuable lesson for life and career from the Astros. What drives you? How does your past inform your passion? Where do you need perseverance? You will never succeed if you surrender. When vision and perseverance come together, we can accomplish unprecedented things.
