You Could Say All the Right Things and Still Blow The Interview

Stories of interview blunders abound. Some people fail fantastically (Take, for example, the candidate who called his wife during the interview to see what was for dinner.). Most of us don’t flame out; we sputter. CareerBuilder has related a number of the more unique mistakes made during an interview, including:

  • Candidate came to interview wearing slippers.

  • Candidate wore a Darth Vader outfit to the interview.

  • Candidate broke out in song in the middle of the interview.

However, they also point out that the number-one thing people do wrong relates to body language. Candidates’ nerves are visible through fidgeting or a lack of eye contact. In addition to preparing for interview content, it’s essential that you prepare your manner. We have three tips:

  1. Plan. Think through the impression you’d like to make and identify the non-verbal pitfalls you may fall into. Are you prone to talk fast when nervous? Do you frown? Have a plan of what you’ll do instead.

  2. Practice. Go over possible interview questions out loud. Enlist a friend or colleague to play the role of your interviewer and give it a trial run.

  3. Check in with yourself. During the interview, take stock. Are you making eye contact? Are you relaxed? You may want to put a reminder in your interview notes prompting you to smile or relax.
