What Are College Presidents Looking forward to This Academic Year?

The new academic year is quickly upon us. While students have yet to descend on campus, administration is busy at work preparing for their arrival. As we anticipate the 2017–18 school year, we asked college presidents what they are most looking forward to in the new year.

Jake Schrum, President of Emory & Henry College in Virginia is entering a public phase of an $80 million campaign that is aimed to strengthen student, faculty, and facilities at the school. The college has already raised $60 million dollars in the silent phase of the campaign and is eagerly anticipating celebrating what they’ve accomplished as they enter this public phase.

Richanne Mankey, President of Defiance College in Ohio always looks forward to campus coming back to life as the students arrive. This year she is also excited about strengthening ties between the campus, the community, and the region. She shares, “with the city and city schools we are working to develop a mutual strategic plan.” College campuses can function as independent islands in the area, but shouldn’t. By working with local communities, the student experience and community is stronger.

College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale (Bronx), New York is finding new ways to give access to education to all students. President Chuck Flynn explains, “I'm looking forward to launching the Gaudium et Spes scholarship program. So far ten colleges and universities have committed to annual full tuition, fees, medical insurance, and room and board scholarships for legal refugees from abroad. Mount Saint Vincent is putting together a recruitment network with the Scalabrini International Migration Network. Perhaps our efforts will pale next to the enormity of the challenge, but the commitment is basic to the Catholic tradition and our obligations as Americans."
