If Your LinkedIn Profile is Missing These, You Could Be Missing Out

You know LinkedIn is important. Far too often, profiles are perfunctory rather than strategic. Is your LinkedIn underperforming for you? Give your profile an audit to make sure it has the following components:

1 Photo. According to LinkedIn profiles with photos get 14 times more views. Be sure your photo is professional in attire and tone. In the age of smartphones, it’s easy to have someone snap a picture in natural light and get a quality photo. Like a passport photo, your head should take up most of the frame.

2 Summary. LinkedIn now has a section for a summary. It’s a great place to add your personal elevator pitch. This is your chance to make an impression and shape how people think of you. Make it count!

3 Job History. In your positions listed, be sure you link to the company or organization you worked with. This results in greater interconnectedness and visibility.

4 References. Contact a few individuals with whom you’ve recently had positive experiences and ask if they would be willing to write a brief paragraph to endorse you on LinkedIn. Make your request clear and concise: it doesn’t need to be elaborate, a short paragraph will suffice. Be sure to include instructions walking them through how to post the reference on LinkedIn. Be willing to return the favor if applicable.

With just a little time and attention, your LinkedIn profile will reflect your skills and accomplishments. This will serve you not only in your current position, but when it comes time to find a new one.
